ইংরেজি ভাষায় article বিষয়টি এবং এর ব্যবহারবিধি বিশেষ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। Articleশুধুমাত্র nounএর পূর্বেই বসে এবং বাক্যে nounএর ব্যবহার এবং প্রয়োগকে সুপ্রতিষ্ঠিত করে অর্থাৎ article fix the noun that follow them
প্রকৃতপক্ষে articleএক প্রকারের demonstrative adjective এবং Determiner before noun.
Articleকে দুই ভাগে ভাগ করা যায়।
Indefinite Article - A ,An
Definite Article- The
>>কোন noun কে নির্দিষ্ট করে বোঝানোর ক্ষেত্রে definite article ব্যবহার করা হয় ।অপরপক্ষে যখন কোন noun কে নির্দিষ্ট করে না বুঝিয়ে সাধারণ অর্থে(In in the sense of 'one' or 'any') ব্যবহার করা হয় তখন ব্যবহৃত হয়।
>>A'এবং 'An' শুধুমাত্র singular countable noun এর আগেই বসে কিন্তু 'The' singular বা Plural countable বা uncountable যে কোনো Noun এর আগেই বসতে পারে।
Note:-
>>Common noun যদি singular number হয় তবে তার আগেই অবশ্যই কোনো না কোনো article বসবে।
যেমন- We saw a/the lion in the jungle.
Use of indefinite article(A ,An)
Indefinite article 'A' 'An' এর ব্যবহার:
>>যখন কোন word consonant দিয়ে শুরু হয় তার আগে 'A' বসে। যেমন a book, a village, A goat, A cow.
>>আবার যখন word vowel কোন দিয়ে শুরু হয়কিন্তু, vowel টির উচ্চারণ 'yu' এর মত সে ক্ষেত্রে সেই সব wordএর আগে 'A' বসে।
যেমন- A University, A Unit.
>>Word- এর শুরুতে ‘ O' vowel- এর উচ্চারণ যখন ‘ one'- এর o'- এর মতন হয়, তখন সেইসব word- এর আগে ' A' বসে।
যেমন— A one-eyed deer, A one rupee note etc.
>>যখন কোনাে word vowel দিয়ে শুরু হয়, তখন তার আগে An বসে।
যেমন— An elephant, An apple, An0xetc.
>>যে সকল শব্দের শুরুতে ' h' consonant- এর উচ্চারণ উহ্য থাকে (mute), তাদের আগে An বসে। যেমন— An heir,
An hour, An honourable person etc.
>>যে সব শব্দের শুরুতে থাকা consonant- এর উচ্চারণ vowel sound দিয়ে শুরু হয় সেই সকল শব্দের আগে An বসে।
যেমন— An SD0, An FRCS, An MLA, An
>>একটি singular countable noun- এর দ্বারা যখন সেই শ্রেণিকে সাধারণভাবে বােঝানাে হয়, তখন ওই noun- এর আগে ‘ A ’ বা ‘ An ' বসে। যেমন— A student should be attentive to his studies.
>>কোনাে কোনাে Proper noun- এর আগে Article বসে তার গুণ (quality) কে প্রকাশ করে এবং সেক্ষেত্রে ওই proper noun common noun রূপে ওই quality যুক্ত শ্রেণিকে represent করে।
যেমন— He is a Rahul Dravid to his
team.
>>একজন person- এর আগে A বা An বসে, যদি সেই ব্যক্তি বক্তার পরিচিত না হন।
যেমন— A Mr. Sen is investigating the case.
>> A ’ preposition হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
যেমন— Rice sells at forty rupees a kilo.
He earns five hundred rupees a day.
>>কোনাে কোনাে সময় noun- এর আগে preposition না বসে সেই স্থানে A বা An বসে।
যেমন — We earns twenty thousand a month. He eats four times a day.
>>কিছু কিছু phrase- এর আগে A অথবা An বসে। যেমন—to have a cold, to take a fancy, to take an interest,
>>, little, lot ইত্যাদি adjective- এর আগে ‘ A ’ বসে।
যেমন— There is a little sugar in the jar. There are a few fruits in the basket.
>>What বা how দিয়ে যদি exclamatory sentence শুরু হয়, তবে singular countable noun- এর আগে A বা An বসে।
যেমন— What a beautiful painting! What an
auspicious occasion! How nice a day!
>>কোনাে ক্ষেত্রে verb, noun হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হলে, তার পূর্বে article বসে।
যেমন— I went out for a walk. He took my car for a drive.
Definite Article The -এর ব্যবহার:
Use of Definite article 'The'
>>কোনাে person বা thing- কে নির্দিষ্ট করে উল্লেখ করার ক্ষেত্রে তার আগে ' the' ব্যবহার করা হয়। যেমন- saw the boy in the morning. I know the man who has done it.
>>Rivers, seas, oceans, gulfs, mountain ranges,group of islands, newspapers, holybooks, ships,trains, historical buildings, hotels, clubs,restaurants, theatres, institutions, historical events, deserts প্রভৃতির নামের আগে ' the' বসে।
যেমন - The Ganga, The Yamuna, The Arabian Sea, The Bay of Bengal, The Gulf of Mexico, The Himalayas, The Andamans, The Telegraph, The Mahabharat, The Titanic, The Palace on wheels,
>>কিছু ভৌগােলিক স্থান এবং কিছু দেশের নাম (বিশেষত সেগুলি যদি অন্যান্য ছােটো ছােটো স্থানের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত হয়) -এর আগে the বসে। যেমন— The Punjab, The Deccan, The Netherlands, The USA, The UK, The UAE, The USSR etc.
>>একটি singular noun যখন কোনাে নির্দিষ্ট শ্রেণিকে সামগ্রিকভাবে বােঝায়, তখন ওই noun- এর আগে the বসে। কিন্তু noun plural হলে ‘ the ' বসে না।
যেমন—The cow is a domestic animal. The dog is a faithful animal.
NOTE::
কিন্তু' Mon ',' Woman ' যখন সমগ্র জাতিকে বােঝায় তার আগে ‘ the বসে.
যেমন— Won is morful.
>>দিক নির্দেশ করার ক্ষেত্রে east, west, north, south প্রভৃতি noun- এর আগে the বসে। যেমন— The sun rises in the east.
>>এমন কোনাে singular noun যা বিশ্বে একটিই বর্তমান,তার আগে the বসে।
যেমন— the earth, the sun, the moon etc.
>>কোনাে adjective- এর দ্বারা যখন সংশ্লিষ্ট শ্রেণিকে সামগ্রিকভাবে বােঝায়, তার আগে the ‘' বসে।
যেমন-The rich should not look down upon the poor.
>>ভাষার আগে 'the' বসলে সেই ভাষাভাষীর মানুষ এবং জাতিকে (national name) বোঝানো হয়।
যেমন— The Chinese are laborious. The French played well.
>>Superlative degree বােঝালে, তার আগে the বসে।
যেমন— He is the best boy. She is the most
beautiful woman.
>>Comparative sense-এ (তুলনা বোঝালে)' the ' adverb হিসেবে ব্যবহূত হয়।
যেমন— The more, the merrier.The sooner, the better.
>>2 টি বা তার অধিক বস্তুর মধ্যে একটিকে নির্দিষ্ট করে বােঝানাের প্রয়ােজনে comparative degree- র আগেও the বসে।
যেমন- He is the taller of the two boys..This is the better of the two options.
>>Comparison বােঝাতে proper noun- এর আগে ‘' the 'বসে।
যেমন— Samudragupta is the Napoleon of
India. Kalidasa is the Shakespeare of India.
>>Musical instruments- এর নামের আগে' the ' বসে।
যেমন— He plays the flute. Rabi can play the tabla.এখানে সাধারণভাবে flute এবং table- কে বােঝানাে হচ্ছে কিন্তু একটি নির্দিষ্ট instrument বাজানাে বােঝানাে হলে,এর আগে a বা an বসে।
যেমন— He has a flute বা He
has a violin
>>Parts of body is possessive adjective-45 স্থানে ‘ the' বসে।
যেমন— He struck me in the leg. I caught him by the arm.
>>Adjective যুক্ত Proper noun- এর আগে ‘ the বসে।
যেমন— The mighty Bhima. The brave Shivaji. The immortal Shakespeare.
>>কিছু বিমূর্ত ধারণাকে (Abstract idea) প্রকাশ করার জন্য কোনাে কোনাে Adjective এবং Common Noun- এর আগে ‘ the ' বসে। যেমন– Do not jump in the dark.Control the beast in you. Mini brought out the
father in Rahamat.
>>কোনাে বস্তু বা বিষয়ের বিশেষ অংশ বােঝাতে' Adjective এর আগে এবং সেই adjective টি যে noun- কে modify করছে তার পূর্বে the বসে।
যেমন— In the middle of the jungle, there is a hut. The top of the hill is beautiful. He went on the back of the house.
>>Caste এবং Communities- এর উল্লেখ থাকলে তার আগে the ' বসে।
যেমন— The Gurjjars demanded for reservation. The Gurkhas are brave people.
>>Ordinal number যখন ভাষায় (in letters) লেখা হয়। তখন তার আগে' the ' বসে, কিন্তু যদি তা Roman- এ লেখা হয় তাহলে ‘ the ' ব্যবহৃত হয় না।
যেমন— Benedict the Sixteenth (Benedict XVI), Chandragupta the Second (Chandragupta II).
>>বিভিন্ন রাজনৈতিক দলের নামের আগে, বিভিন্ন বাহিনীর নামের আগে ‘ the' বসে।
যেমন— The BJP, The CPI (M), The Army, The Police etc.
>>Profession বােঝানাের ক্ষেত্রে Noun- এর আগে ' the বসে।
যেমন— He joined the Church. (Clergyman)He is going to meet the Press.
>>Surname এর Plural form সেক্ষেত্রে সেই নির্দিষ্ট family- কে সামগ্রিকভাবে বােঝায়।
যেমন— The Sens, The Mukherjees, The Sharmas.
>>কোনাে কোনাে ক্ষেত্রে Common noun- কে গুরুত্ব দেওয়ার জন্য এবং তাকে superlative- এর force দেওয়ার জন্য তার আগে the বসে। যেমন— He is the leader of the time. She is the singer of the day.
>>পরিমাপের এককের আগে ‘ the বসে এককটিকে
individually বােঝানাে হয়।
যেমন- Petrol is sold by the litre. Bananas are sold by the dozen.
>>বিভিন্ন tournament, sports cups এবং trophies- এর নামের আগে' the ' বসে।
যেমন— He took part in the Davis Cup
